Hi All:
I tend to agree with Matt's view, vis-a-vis the idea that the User Group is
there to serve its users. Sure, if we as the "leaders" genuinely feel that our
members are missing out on something by allowing themselves to be left behind
as the OS X liner steams away from the port, we certainly have the opportunity
and perhaps the duty to let them know how we feel. But fundementally we are
there to be responsive to our paying members wishes. If that means showing
them OS 7.6.1 MacTCP control panel stuff, so be it.
In my ten or more years of User Group officiating, I have not seen Apple
"pushing" User Group leaders so agressively to persuade our members and the
public of the benefits of acquiring OS X. It's almost like someone at Apple
has said, "OK, let's see just what these User Group Leaders can really do for
us!!" I do not necessarily think that this is a bad thing - I just agree with
Matt that when a member with an LCIII calls me with a problem it is a little
unrealistic to think that I am going to do anything other than the best job I
can to assist that member.
Of course, presentations at our general meetings are another thing. We have a
policy to run OS X only on the club's iBook that we use for presentations, and
I think vendor presentations will just naturally follow the OS X direction.
We'll take older OS stuff to the Macintosh Basics SIG or to the Q & A session
at each member meeting. I think what OS X has meant for our club is a demand
for us to broader our offerings; to not only ramp up of Macintosh Basics SIG
meetings for older system users but also ramp up an OS X SIG itself.
