MacWoburn varies meetings by user interest and many topics like digital
photography span X and 9. Many of our users are still on 8 and won't
move to X until they get new hardware. You can't mandate when your
customer buys a faster, more stylish car any more than you can tell
someone politely to drop a couple of grand (hardware + software
upgrades) to adopt a new OS. People who come will be able to make the
switch easier as they have heard the problems of other members addressed.
But when folks DO get new hardware, does your group do anything with it?
Our group recycles them into schools and families without computers. If
someone drops the machines on my porch I'll let the community know
what's available. One time a whole moving van pulled up and I felt like
Santa in July--various school systems received CPUS, mice, monitors,
even laser printers--and 30 or so systems went to South Africa.
We are also aligned with a group which twice yearly brings old Macs (SE
forward) to South Africa. (The Pluses can't be used because of the
wiring.) Alan and Donna operate out Winchester and Medford, MA. If
MacWorld ever comes back to Boston, perhaps your groups can think about
bringing old equipment to go where it will be used for many years.
