Sharing about Our group: in the early days more willing and able
folks were "on board", to do a paper based Newsletter, run a First
Class bulletin board, deliver promo materials to libraries and shops,
create a Disk of the Month, send a monthly card, do a MacFest , a
support list of phone numbers-etc .
All those functions are now dead; about 5 or 6 folks do all the work.
Heck, we don't even have anyone willing to GET the review items lined
up,much less do a review! 8-( .
Going to MacWorld SF helps keep me hanging in there as a leader. In
the nick of time..
THANKS GARR and all the folks who support the User Group efforts. I
like all the productive commentary here.
I'd love to pass the Pres/Chair hat on.....and become "just" a worker
bee. No such luck!
We get a good cross section of Vendors and our group has a few very
dynamic folks for in house stuff, so I think we are really having a
good time anyway! I have realized you cannot please every one and we
are all volunteer etc...My main frustration is with Vendors "flaking
out" at last minute and having to scramble. We at one time could
schedule them many months ahead of time but cannot realistically do
so now, too many change of plans by Vendors.
We consider ourselves very lucky that Adobe is coming this month with
a Photoshop 7 demo. Our group is crazy for anything graphics related!
We had a fabulous Intro to PS Elements at the Graphics and Design
SIG this month too, by a MoM member- teacher of Digital Photography
at the JC. We find many members are willing to chip in if asked to
share their expertise.
FileMaker is our main Meeting Vendor next month.
As you see, we are focusing on more cross platform programs . We
network pretty well with the local PC group as well. Sometimes this
helps get good Vendor interest by the more highend folks, approached
as a joint meeting potential. The Vendors are mostly local, not
flying in so we have not used the idea of networking with other
nearby MUGs to get Vendors around. None of them have contacted us
either.
<tho we will NOT become one group, the PC group President is on our
Board & I'll soon be on their board>
We support the local WiFi "gang" getting off the ground. <lol>
We do what we can and keep 4 SIGs and a main meeting going. Email
based newsletter. Website. A Book and t-shirt giveway every month.
And are happy with "just" that.
I've posted this before and got rave reviews:

Interesting article: Dvorak Online: Goodbye, User Groups?

Although I do not agree entirely, the article has some valid points.
Food for thought.
