Thank you all for the discussion regarding vendor visits and presentations.
At one time, we had vendors 'fighting' to give presentations and often had
two for each meeting. Over the past few years, the presentations have dried
up so that we're lucky to get 3 or 4 vendors a year. I've also noticed a
trend where we don't even have common courtesy. We'll get the pressure to
schedule someone, and then they back out at the last minute. Even worse,
we've had some just not show up and only days or weeks afterwards an email
with some excuse.
I realize that Phoenix is an oddity. A huge metro area out in the middle of
the sonoran desert. One has to really want to come here. To that end, we've
encouraged vendors to visit several user grups at the same time like David
Krafchick mentioned. Luckily, Tucson holds their meeting the day before ours
and they are down the freeway just 100 miles. And there are three other
smaller groups in the Phoenix metro area. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem
to have helped any in attracting presentations.
Perhaps it's the economy. Perhaps it's the new dynamics where vendors figure
that everyone can get info over the net so why spend all that money on a
road trip? And perhaps they are putting their money into PC groups.
I'd really appreciate hearing from those who are successful in attracting
vendor presentations. It appears to me from the posts that those groups are
located in the back yards of some of the vendors or have a very active apple
engineer in the area.
And, I want to express thanks to those vendors who do come to out meetings,
who send us review and raffle materials, and who supply us even those
presentations in a box.
