I think you are on to something. Microsoft has gone even further with
its subscription license - some say too far - but what it covers is
software, including all upgrades for the license period. It is way more
than $99 per year. And all the discounts businesses depended on when
buying in bulk are going away the end of the month. There is a flurry
of buying going on at the discount. The pricing and income curve will
change as businesses move over or move on.
As to some sort of subscription from Apple, that's a very interesting
concept. How would Apple control it, charge for it? Could it be an
option for User groups members only or that just too many to lock out?
Apple is really not doing anything out of the ordinary, but if enough
customer politely complain, then who knows what Apple might do. I agree
a petition may not get attention, but a call or direct discussion with
Apple at events like Macworld can turn things in a better direction.
BTW Microsoft was going to make the shift in 60 day back in October last
year. All customer said it too much too fast and the date was moved to
the end of this month. Even Microsoft listens.
