For the record, I am one of those people who would like to see an e-mail
only version of .mac. I think there are reasons that a lot of people,
including myself, are upset. The first is the package pricing, rather than
component pricing.
The second being that when iTools was rolled out, Steve Jobs at MacWorld
used the term "free for life" when describing iTools. The issue with me is
not that Apple is charging for iTools services that were once free. The
issue is that Apple and Steve (either or both, depending on how much you
think that Jobs speaks for Apple) are now breaking that promise of e-mail
for life. I switched to iTools mail because I wanted an e-mail address that
I wouldn't have to change. Now, if I want to keep it, I have to pay $99 a
year.
I agree with those who say that nothing is free, and if you want something,
you should pay for it. However, iTools seemed to be part of OS 9. You paid
for iTools when you bought OS 9 (and X). The iDisk and were integrated into
the OS, where you could mount the iDisk like a regular disk.
Some people have taken Job's "free for life" claim very seriously. I know
that there are already people seriously considering filing a class action
lawsuit against Apple over this issue, if it hasn't been done already. I
personally don't think that is the best way to go, Apple did go back on a
promise that it made to their users.
Lastly, there has been a lot of discussion about not telling MUGs or current
iTools users before MacWorld. With regards to that, Apple hardly ever
pre-releases information anyway. I don't how they could have "softened the
blow." No matter when they chose to announce it, there are those who would
have said "why didn't they tell us sooner." They gave current iTools
members 90 days to use the new service, and I think that is sufficient
notice.
