Not sure how relevant this would be to an iBook user, but a company called
Ositech makes a PCMCIA type of modem card which DOES work directly with
digital phone lines as well as analog phone lines. What happens is that you
attach the card to the curly wire that normal runs from the telephone set to
the handset. You leave the handset sitting on the phone but minus any
electrical cord connection. When you click "Dial" in your telecommuncations
program, the Ositech card detects that it is attached to a digital system and
causes a "wizard" window to open which first instucts the user to take the
handset off the telephone and to manually dial the phone number. The "wizard"
takes the phone number that you had programmed into your telecommunications
program and displays it in huge letters on screen, to make it very readible.
From there, the call just goes through as normal except that the connection
speeds tend to be somewhat less than you would get if you had access to an
analog phone line. This PCMCIA card can also certainly be used with analog
phone lines. Ositech also makes a model that is a dual Ethernet and
digital/analog modem card.
Our company reps spend a fair amount of time at our franchised dealerships
where the only analog phone lines tend to be attached to the fax machines. The
Ositech cards allow them to place critical telecommunications sessions through
the digital phone systems that exist in most dealerships.
Of course, the coming thing as already mentioned is to get yourself off the
phone line altogether, get to a broadband source of internet conectivity, and
then use a VPN client to get yourself back to your own company's resources.
Good luck!!
