I was a tech support guy for Supra. We saw lots of modems that got
destroyed by connecting them to digital phone networks. I believe it
was because digital networks carry more voltage. So don't do it.
There are converters available that allow you to connect an analog
modem to a digital phone network, but I have no idea how good the
ensuing connection is. We always recommended installing a separate
analog line for modems.

Hi,
I have a member who is having their lines at work converted to a
digital phone system. I read somewhere in my documentation that you
should not connect clamshell iBooks' internal 56k modem to a digital
line. Is there a workaround for this? Can it even be done?
It is my understanding that computer modems do not work on digital
phone systems (they can even damage the modem!). The workaround is to
install a separate analog line for the iBook, or install an ethernet
network and hook that up to either a:
-Airport base station (use the modem)
-Broadband modem and DSL/Cable router (add the router so other
computers on the network can access the internet as well)
