OK, I know that Mac User Group Leaders have a passionate if not
irrational devotion to all things Apple, but what I saw earlier this
week expands the horizon for our nuttiness to all new levels.
I am employed by General Motors of Canada and a couple of days ago was
invited to participate in an all-employee launch celebration at our
Canadian headquarters building, for the new Saturn Ion automobile,
coming to your local Saturn Retailer soon as a long awaited update to
the original Saturn sedan.
Now, one unique feature of the new Ion that I had already known about
but didn't fully appreciate is a trim panel which extends all the way up
the front windshield pillar, down the side of the roof panel over the
doors, and down the rear window side pillar. This panel is NOT body
coloured. From the factory, it is available in one of two subtle shades
depending on the outside body colour of the car. Many people overlook
this panel in their first look at the Ion, because it can be perceived
as a shadow rather than as an actual different coloured panel.
Anyway, what I learned at the employee preview was that this panel is
all part of a new Personalization scheme that GM will introduce in
conjunction with the Ion. It seeems that this panel, as well as a number
of interior trim panels, can be easily removed and replaced by
customized alternative panels, in a manner very similar to the way cell
phones have evolved.
So the event included a little fun competition between two teams of
employees aimed at seeing which team could switch from the standard to
custom panels in the least amount of time. I was viewing this event from
quite a distance away, and although I could certainly see that the new
replacement panels were a different colour and contrasted a great deal
more with the car colour than had the orignal panels, it was not until
the presenation was over that I had a chance to actually walk right up
to the vehicle and see the panels up close.
I was startled to find that the replacement panels on the cream Saturn
Ion were the colour and pattern of the OS X Jaguar logo!!
It's actually eerie how close the patterns match. Placed on a white car,
with interior panels set to match and a white iBook included as
standard equipment, Steve could move a pile of these through the Apple
Stores!!
Anyway, take a looksee at your local Saturn outlet when the Ions begin
to arrive. Ask about the Jaguar body panels!!
