I have a 333mhz Lombard PowerBook G3, have been using OS X since
shortly after 10.1 shipped. I have a Canon S600 printer with which I
have been quite satisfied. A week ago I upgraded to Jaguar. and have
constantly had problems with printing.
What I do, mostly, is take photos of customers' chimneys and chimney
problems, put them in a folder on my desktop, open the folder in
GraphicConverter's Browser, rename each with a short discription, and
using the "Print Catalog" function, print them out usually 4 to a
landscape page. I always preview them before printing, as I frequently
catch problems before printing them that way. A lot of things I liked
better about GC under X, but previewing wasn't one of them. Under 8.6 -
9.x, pages only had to be rendered once to preview and print. Under X,
they have to be rendered to preview, then rendered again to print.
Rendering pages takes so much time on 1999's 2nd fastest laptop!
Under Jaguar, I tell "Print Catalog" to 'Preview", and it goes to work
rendering the pages, then they just evaporate. They don't preview. I
downloaded the latest beta from GC"s website, but It didn't make
Preview 2.0 work with it. Thorsten Lemke was surprised that it didn't,
because it did for a lot of other folks.
I do it over, and click "Save as PDF", and save it as a PDF. Then I
open the PDF with Preview2.0, and tell it to print, and it goes to
work. I open the PrintCenter window, and it is "Connecting to printer"
... forever, or till I unplug a USB cable and plug it back in, and then
it switches to "processing Page" ZERO! It keeps trying to process
page 0, and never gets moved on to page 1! I don't remember ever
getting Preview to print.
I can open the PDF under Acrobat Reader, and , if I remember to set the
Page Setup the right way before printing, Adobe will usually print, at
least the first time. Since it doesn't automatically set its page setup
to landscape when it opens a Landscape page, I frequently get the first
page printing wrong, so I cancel it. The next time I tell it to print,
it gets stuck at either "Connecting to Printer", or Processing page 0.
I downloaded Gimp/Print, and it has lots of drivers. It even has one
for my Canon BJC80, which I thought I'd never get to work with X. But
it doesn't have one for the S600. It has several drivers that will make
the printer print, but not anything satisfactory.
I'm about at a dead end. Should I reinstall Jaguar? Can I reinstall
just the drivers, or Preview2.0, or dump Jaguar and go back to 10.1.5?
Some things about Jag I'd really miss, but I REALLY NEED to be able to
PRINT. If you can help, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you
