It sounds to me as if your problem is more than just a printer driver
problem.
I would boot from the OS X CD-ROM by holding down the "C" key on startup,
launch Disk Utility and run the new Repair Privileges feature. Be
prepared to let it run for a long time. It may take as much as 45
minutes to do its thing. I suspect that this will fix your problem.
If the above doesn't help, let me ask you this. Your Canon S600 printer
is a USB printer. Do you have it connected directly to your Mac, or is it
connected via a hub? If you are using a hub, is it powered, or
non-powered? If you do not have your printer connected via a good,
powered, USB hub, that could be the source of your problem. Printers and
scanners often cause too much of a draw on the USB bus if a good powered
hub isn't used and this can cause instability and odd behavior. The hub
that I always recommend is the Pertech Hubmaster:

Finally, I have heard of instances where folks upgraded from OS X 10.1.x
to 10.2 and funny things happened along the way. If none of the above
help, trashing OS X, and then installing a fresh copy, may fix all of
your problems.
Other things that you can try, but I doubt that they will help:
Download the latest driver for your S600 (if you already haven't) here:

You can install fresh copies of just the OS X 10.2 software components
that you need from your OS X 10.2 CD-ROM using Pacifist:

If you have ever used TomeViewer, it works in a very similar way.
I hope that this is helpful.
