.Mac is selling itself. You don't think that 100 000 subscribers in 2
months is good? Go and look at the rate of signup for other pay-for
services on the internet.
No, I do not think this is good. In fact, these are miserable figures
that
prove out the ineffectiveness of this product.
You realise that's 1600+ subscribers per DAY? I expect it to level off
after a slight peak around 30 Sept but youcan't be serious.
Curmudgeon or not, 100 000 PAYING subscribers is excellent for any
internet service especially in the current climate.
If you have any figures for any other internet fee-based service then
by all means.
Here's another example:
Yahoo recently changed their services to "pay for". Their charges:
Yahoo Mail Forwarding: $29.99 per annum
100MB Yahoo Briefcase Storage: $34.95 per annum
They also charge for GeoCities but it's a bit more complex:
"One new GeoCities feature, called GeoCities Plus, will cost $4.95 a
month with a one-time $10 setup fee. The service doesn't serve ads and
offers 25MB of storage, FTP access and additional bandwidth.
Additionally, Yahoo unveiled GeoCities Advantage, a package for more
advanced Web publishers that includes ad-free space, more sophisticated
tools, 100MB of storage and a domain name. The service will cost $19.95
a month with a $25 setup fee."
Going for the Mail Forwarding and the Geocities Advantage would seem to
replicate .Mac services. The email isn't as good, the domain name is
slightly better than a mac.com address. But then you don't get Virex,
Backup...and Yahoo Calendar is not as pretty as iCal but it might be
more useful.
Still...this pretty package adds up to
($19.95x12) + ($29.99) + ($25) = $294.39
So, Randy, got any numbers of how many people have signed up for that?
Yahoo seem a bit tight-lipped about it.
