I have found that many of the MUG specials are available to other people
as other special offers. However, that doesn't mean the MUG specials are
any less valuable. They are still discounts. It is just that other
discounts that are similar may exist.
The best part of it is that they are all collected together.
I rarely purchase software that is offered in the vendor areas, simply
because they are not programs that I use. One exception is Stuffit
Deluxe, another is MacLink Plus. While they have had user group discounts
(and still do in many cases), the upgrade price is usually less than the
price of a new program and usually, the vendors only discount the new
price.
I did wind up with 5 licenses to Microsoft Word, because of the fact that
when they came to our meetings, they did full licenses (new product) for
less than the current upgrade price. Unfortunately, those days are behind
us. For more than one reason. I have also experienced getting software as
NFS copies when I worked for Computer City. And have done software
reviews to get others. There are ways to keep spending to a minimum, but
there is no reason for vendors to offer discounts ONLY to MUGs. That is
just one more way that they are able to sell product. (Quit often, we
still pay more than wholesale, but there is nothing wrong with that
either)
User groups can provide value to their members by providing a compliation
of specials (listed as MUG or not). To their members. I have done that
for years and even through the InfoManger provide it in Word or PDF
format to other groups to reproduce.l
The main thing to remember is that the groups need to promote the
specials, not knock them to members.
