I've been reading tonnes of messages just giving plain hell to the MUG
Centre due to one single mistake... it's about time we re-evaluated
this.
Note: This message, although in favour of the MUG Centre, is not
blindly approving its moves - one bit at a time. It's not that anything
that comes with the stamp, "The MUG Centre" must be praised as a
magnificient acheivement. In other words this is not coming from a
blind poodle of the MUG Centre. It has its faults and this recent
password link is a grave error from the MUG Centre. But the way I see
it, the MUG Centre should be seen as a convenience for the MUG
community, not an inconvenience.
- The MUG Centre is a welcome contribution to the MUG community. Chuck
Joiner and Shawn King have done good things in bringing out the special
bits of the MUG community, following it up with regional reports, and
so on... It's not monopolised by any one group, and information flows
freely.
- The MUG Centre's good work is evidenced by Apple's links to the site.
Of course one could also say that "it's the only MUG hub, blah...", but
it's a quality site. Content from the site is good.
- Yes, the MUG Centre's had its faults. This recent password issue is a
particular sore thorn for the MUG Centre. But to say that it's "killing
MUGs" is a little out of line.
I'm not really one for "holier than thou" and "can't everyone agree"
when I type this message, although I do hope more people would just get
along. It's not like saying, "Oh, all clubs love my club 100%", or this
over-Godly glorification, but more a case of not provoking conflict.
Believe me, I have my reservations. I'm just expressing my views on
this.
On passwords and vendor discounts:
I've hardly ever heard of a group that gives out these discount codes
to anyone - even non-members. This is because most vendors would get
angry if they found out that suddenly, "everyone" had access to their
code. Then these vendor discounts would go the way of the T-Rex.
Vendor discounts is one of these links that draws a fine line between
non-member and member benefits. You've got to sign up to enjoy these.
Believe me, I'm on very good terms with a BeiMac friend - this guy just
helped the whole group lift off. But he's not a member. Therefore, I
stick firmly to the principle: if you did not submit an application
form, you're not a member and you don't get these vendor codes. Period.
PS, the vendor codes are not "saleable", or anything like that. They
come with the membership and are not available as a separate entity.
You can come to the group to get the code, okay. But that's pointless
if that's the only reason you're in. You're in to make friends
("instant" or not), to have fun, to just be a MUG member and enjoy
anything and everything that comes with it.
And of course, since vendor discounts are a members-only thing, they
should be password-protected.
Must run now, preparing for tonight's BeiMac meeting, but after that,
I'll come back and add more to the list.
Best
