Americans are a particularly mobile society.
Take Brian for example, he still follows SDMUG, as well as LCMUG, but he now
lives in Oregon. There are no MUG's within a reasonable driving distance.
So, what fills the void for people like Brian? The internet: forums,
discussion lists, on-line user groups, private MUG discussion lists, e-mail.
I would never suggest that a local MUG is the *only* solution to
obtaining information. Certainly, in the above examples it makes
perfect sense.
Perhaps my problem is understanding how an online service, such as a
BBS, Forum, News Service, etc. could be called a User Group? We all
have access to everything on the Internet already so you really don't
need to join a "group" to participate. You do, however, have to join
a local MUG to receive the benefits offered. Perhaps that's where my
confusion is. Our local group can point our members to all the Mac
relative web sites and mailing lists, yet still offer benefits that
can not be found online.
Anyway, we should all be working together, not picking at each other, but
listening to each other. It doesn't matter whether you agree with someone,
we are all entitled to have our opinions. And when we do disagree with each
other, can we let the other person know in a gentler fashion. Let's not be
so quick to attack each others thoughts and opinions. Let's help each
other.
I agree. I certainly did not mean to personally attack anyone, but
was arguing the relative merits of the local MUG. I would also never
suggest that *any* service that offers Mac info is not useful. If I
seemed a little defensive it was because it has been suggested by
some that "online groups" will replace the local MUGs. I find that
suggestion ridiculous.
I appreciate your insight and response. Keep up the good work!
Thanks,
Claude
