Visibility for user groups is always important. I know how often they can be
overlooked or "guaranteed" to an extent that they're not even "standing out
there".
User groups are about tech support, vendor deals and 2nd-hand deals, yeah,
everyone knows about that. :-) I personally prefer to think of the tech
support part as a "second AppleCare, minus the non-hardware costs."
But hey, at the end of the day, user groups are about people. Why do I go to
a usergroup when I know I know nobody at the place (sorry about my excess "I
knows")? Well, aren't we all Mac users? Is there not a common alliance
between us?
And that's what I love about MUGs. I visited the Mac Users Group in
Switzerland in the summer of 2002. I knew NOBODY there AT ALL. When I
started BeiMac I knew virtually NOBODY AT ALL too.
End result: the leader of the meeting I had in summer 2002 had lunch with
me, drove me to the next train station, and chatted with me all the way. The
BeiMac group I founded brought me with a great deal of Mac folks and even
potential biz partners.
This kind of alliance between user groups and this comraderie between Mac
users in user group alliances, as odd/weird/strange as it may sound, brings
out at times heavy emotions - that of gratitude, that I know that there are
people out there who share my passion, those who I know are good friends
from the moment we first meet.
