Hi all,
A great subject for discussion and one that I hear a lot about from
group leaders in our region.
For projectors: In terms of some methods we've seen as most effective,
the best one for those who's budgets don't allow purchase is a
bartering arrangement with their local reseller (best with "mom 'n
pops," if you have one in your area).
The reseller will provide a projector for the group's meetings and, in
exchange, the MUG helps promote their business via web badge,
newsletter, etc.. This works well with OTHER equipment as well. Since
not everyone has a reseller close by or, perhaps, a willing one, we
also offer discounts to our member MUGs on new purchases.
We have worked on a program for nearly a year with little success with
the manufacturers, themselves, but have had good luck with discounts
from distributors on refurbs and older models. The once 4,000.00 -
6,000.00 projectors are now in the 1,000.00 range for a decent 1200
lumen model that supports up to 1024X768 in some cases. Still a lot of
money for many groups but a far better goal that in the past. Some
resellers may be ready to sell a great quality older projector used in
their store (same with training centers, corporations, theaters, etc.)
so it is worth asking.
This may reflect back to the discussion of raffles, etc., and raising
those funds creatively. MaMUGs has programs in our region for all of
these things but I'd be happy to talk with any group further off-list
about what might be helpful.
The best prices we've found thus far are from
http://www.ibuydigital.com and from
http://www.projectordepot.com
Regarding broadband, of our 40+ member MUGs, only about 10% have
broadband at meetings and about 20% have any online access (that
includes those w/ cell connections on their own). Yet another reason to
get groups together in the one location that might offer such a
connection for a larger preso, I think.
Cheers,
Dan
