MUGs and computer recycling

  • Subject: MUGs and computer recycling

I haven't seen much discussion of computer recycling and e-waste on this list - the subject came up briefly in the "Helping out in the community" thread - so I'll start this new thread.

As you probably realise, a lot of computer-related equipment is produced and sold, much of it outdated and replaced in just a few years. Landfilling of computer equipment is a serious problem.

Some areas in which computer user groups can help divert materials from landfills:

* help find new homes for old equipment and materials
* refurbish and donate older gear to worthy causes
* raise awareness of recycling opportunities in the community

I'm involved with the Colorado Macintosh User Group in Boulder, Colorado, USA <http://comug.com>. One function we serve is matching donors and needy groups or individuals that can utilise used (sometimes older and less powerful) Mac systems. As for recycling, a representative of EcoCycle, our local recycling organisation, gave a presentation at one of our meetings on e-waste and local recycling facilities.

FWIW, I'll mention this link on our Web site, which is on "Selling, donating, recycling your unwanted Mac in Colorado"

<http://www.comug.com/sell-donate-recycle-mac.html>

I would like to hear what other user groups are doing to help their communities reduce the landfilling of Macs and related equipment and materials: modems, monitors, printers, printer cartridges, cables, software, documentation, floppies, CDs, etc.

[In the big picture, I believe the whole issue really comes down to *producer* responsibility - requiring industries to take back and deal with the goods they produce, but that's a whole soapbox (;-) ]
