Hi Jim,
We included our membership db into our site when we rebuilt the site
this last summer. We moved from a static site to a dynamic one - driven
by php/mysql. It works great to combine an easy way for us to email our
membership, have different levels of membership - only our Gold members
have access to the members only areas of the website, and have a
website that is a breeze to keep updated. It also makes it easy for
anyone on the board to access & update membership info or send out a
mailing, and we aren't having to retrain/move our membership database
around to different board members as positions change - it's all online
(& password protected).
When new members are added, they automatically get an email with their
login & password. The next phase that we plan to build in to to keep
the member in "active state" for 1 year after they pay, then have them
automatically go inactive until they renew - with that, they would get
a couple of reminder emails to let them know it's time to renew. To be
able to do that, you've got to have access to a cron file on the server
which runs different programs at an interval you specify automatically.
The other thing we could implement is a PayPal method of accepting
payment.
Our board has talked about generalizing the code to make is useable for
any MUG, and making it available at a reasonable cost. All you'd need
is a web server capable of php/mysql.
If you're interested, let me know - it will spur us to action :)
