For me it is simply "It's the Software"
The hardware LOOKS better but it really shines in terms of the
software. For example, a recent review of non-linear video editing
tools proclaimed that if you want to work in Digital Video then you
better learn the Apple (Final Cut Pro) and Avid interfaces pronto. You
can't even get Final Cut Pro for Windows - that says something.
Mac OS X is also the first time that I can use the same OS as my wife
without resorting to using another OS on a different machine. She likes
Office and FileMaker whereas I like Terminal - an application she
neither sees nor launches.
The lack of wizards pleases me. I know where all my files are and I
know where the preferences for those files are. If I want to do
something it is easy to learn how - there's no need to hide the
complexity behind a wizard because there's little complexity to hide. I
can do what I want - not what some boffin writing a wizard thinks I
want to do.
Part of it is also the software that isn't here yet. Industrial Light
and Magic recently released OpenEXR for free. You can use it on Linux,
IRIX and Mac OS X. They didn't support Windows and you still can't get
it for Windows. Mac OS X is the only consumer operating system that was
supported.
Finally, it's safer with a Mac. I installed two computers and left them
both on the internet without adding any patches or anti-virus software
or firewalls. Just the default install. Within 36 hours the Windows PC
had 78 pop-up adverts on the screen and had been hacked internally. The
Mac was completely untouched. I'm an IT professional by trade and I
know how to secure and maintain Windows, UNIX and Macs. I choose the
Mac so that I can spend my time fixing other people's computers in
return for money. I don't have to waste time fixing my own.
