Hey Graeme,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your post... I hope other people
replied to you off-list... I see a couple of answers to the question you
received, and maybe a couple of questions, too...
Answer #1: "the opportunity for hands on instruction to gain knowledge."
One answer is in the question itself.
If we could all learn from surfing webpages or reading books, then User
Groups would definitely either be dead or would never have begun. The fact
is, we all learn more quickly and easily when something is demonstrated right
in front of us.
Answer #2: <

7. Get together and have some fun
As you may have seen me post before, every group has its own purpose,
structure, style, etc., so our particular group's list may not be appropriate
for another group, like a campus group may be fighting to keep Macs on campus,
etc. And now, a couple of questions:
Question #1: "I'm faced with a certain amount of inertia/apathy. Do I
continue putting effort into getting it off the ground"
What are this person's expectations, and maybe they should be adjusted? Is
she/he expecting a membership or meetings of 100 or 200 people? A full slate
of officers like Secretary, Treasurer, Webmaster, Newsletter Editor, etc?
Maybe that's not going to happen right now?
I know QMUG/LA could be so much, could do so much, but that's up to its
members. As the primary officer, I am willing to do the basics, but
everything beyond that is up to the members. So if she/he has an idea, and
other people like it, then maybe they'll help make it happen.

Question #2: Do enough people know about this potential new group? Should
maybe some energy be focused on publicity/advertising?
Maybe the people who *would* be willing to help out just don't know about
this potential new group yet? Maybe a little write-up/article in the local
paper? What would make this group unique and special? The only one in the
area? Great meeting location? Any special focus?
And I think regardless of what happens, stay upbeat. Some people will not
respond to e-mail, some people will flake, some people will bitch and complain
and whine but not do anything to help. Smile, accept that, and move on. Life
is too short to waste it being upset. I hope that helps. =)
Sincerely,
Doan Thiel Stafford *
