Six months ago I posted the number of user groups and Apple Stores in each
state as of Aug '02 and Jan '03 and how their numbers had grown. Now that
another six months have gone by, I thought an update was in order. I quickly
re-surveyed Apple's online locator and retail page for that info, and was
surprised by the results.

Perspective.

In the past six months, total U.S. MUGs fell from 598 to 548 (-8%)

Hopefully, Apple, the Advisory Board and Regional Liaisons can see that
Idaho, North Dakota and West Virginia are hanging on w/ only one MUG each, and
the District of Columbia and South Dakota now have no MUGs -- Mac users in
these states have no general/public/community groups in their states to go to
for help or support.

These conclusions are partly because Apple' user group locator is not entirely accurate, as no list can be. South Dakota, for instance, still has the Apple Core of Siouxland -- at least its Web site is there. The largest community user group in the land is Washington Apple Pi, whose headquarters are in Maryland, but which covers the entire District of Columbia metro area. Apple has it listed in Virginia, where our general meetings are held, but it certainly is not our headquarters. It should be listed in all three jurisdictions. Some other groups also have more than one state coverage, if they are located near state lines.

For an alternative listing of MUGs you can go to our list at

http://www.wap.org/info/external/wapusergrouplist.html

which I try my darndest to keep up to date, and which has a number of user groups that Apple's locator does not have. Our list itself is not completely accurate, as it is impossible to immediately keep up with changes that take place. So I'd say that you cannot get accurate numbers with snapshots of two times; you have to watch over an extended time.
