Although I can't really speak of the implementations of this, as I run
a teen (online) group, my personal thought is that this service would
be a great thing for members, especially those in the older population
who have no means of transportation.
However, a serious problem is evident. What if something happens?
Problems relating to liability and/or insurance are important to note
here. I'm pretty sure that the plans most groups who carry insurance
have don't include transportation (though, not knowing all that much on
insurance, I could be very wrong indeed).
Stuff to think about.

This is a semi-serious question for user groups:
How many of you have a car and:
1. use it to drive to the homes of members to solve their tech support
questions?
(Does your group even offer such a service?)
(Hey, would Apple do that?)
2. actually think of carpooling folks (particularly to these who don't
have
a car or underage junior members) to the next meeting?
I'm open for both (1) and (2)...
You know, that car you have could be put into real use.

For me I'd do (1) - last December a Dutch member had a problem (yes,
expats
number aplenty here in Beijing) with her Cube and Jaguar + Apps - went
there
by taxi. Hey, I though, if I had a car it'd be better - no fees (apart
from
gas)...
(2) We're just hoping we have one of those mega-events either in
August or
December (or both) in the local Mac community. (Expect a few
hundred...) As
few folks here have a car (the only folks I know for sure are a member
in NW
Beijing, the leader of the other group here (MacFans) and me)... hey,
wouldn't a car work out to be fine?
If you REALLY want to start saving the environment, it's better
carpooling
than what the Swiss do - sorting out their bottles by colour. (Hey,
it's not
bad, but how much emissions do empty bottles consume/prevent???)...
Just my thoughts gone wild - and public... ;-)
