Our User Group serves Metro Detroit, "The Motor City2 and funny thing is
that you literally HAVE to have a car to survive and function in Michigan.
We do have public transportation (bus lines) but one serves the inner city
and the other serves the suburbs and they don9t get along well. Metro
Detroit is very expressway oriented, ask anyone here directions to someplace
further than 5 miles and they usually try to incorporate an expressway. I
think the plan was that since we are/were the home of most of the automobile
manufacturing in the US there is NO REASON for anyone in the Detroit area
NOT to own a car so public transportation is an afterthought (no subways, no
local trains).
So to answer your question, yes I do own a car and have used it many times
to help members at their homes. It is a 3way of life2 in Metro-Detroit.
As far as how this relates to the User Group, we have members that travel
over an hour drive to get to our meetings. We also have older members who do
not attend except in the summer months because it gets dark too early for
them to see how to drive.
People here are so used to driving their own vehicles that members who could
car pool, do not because it is just excepted that you drive your own vehicle
because it is our way of life here in Metro Detroit.
