Hi Rick.
I just did a full rethink and redesign of our website a few months ago. You
can see it at
http://www.sgvmug.org. The member area password, for now, is
garfield, and thursday.
This site makes the move away from a paper newsletter to more immediate and
easily accessible info. We plan to have special focused newsletter issues at
times. And I/we have a plan to keep our name in stores with a newsletter
alternative. (No one is stepping up to the plate to do it though.) I was not
in favor of a downloadable newsletter because that does not solve the
making-the-newsletter issues we faced.
This site is not on my own server so I don't have access to stats to know
how well travelled it is or where referrals come from yet. Readers are
writing to say thank you, but that's our internal reach, not external, so
far. I need the visitor numbers that can show as many, or more, folks read
it than received our newsletter in order to collect ad $ or trades. For now,
I've worked out my own trades on a one by one basis to benefit the group.
We trade the hosting space. I did the site as a gift. So we don't have hard
costs to meet.
We don't have any affiliate programs yet.
As far as attracting members, perhaps having a well done site that clearly
helps people get to our meetings and know what a meeting offers will help.
And hopefully more folks will find us in a web search now that there are
keywords, etc.
