Basic liability ($1Million) runs us about $250 (based on 120 members) -

Hello everyone. A no-real-UG-to-belong-to lurker here (I'm trying to rally
the troops in the Shenandoah Valley), who happens to run a civic
not-for-profit.
We have had much success in the past 6 years developing strong
organizational relationships. This has been a tremendous benefit when it
comes to our liability for workshops and trainings, where participants are
physically housed and fed for 6-day sessions.
By keeping an informed and open relationship with a private school, we have
been able to use space, house participants and go about our work as "hosted
by", and sometimes as a "project of" the school.
Whether these kinds of relationships are appropriate for every group, of any
not-for-profit kind, is a decision best made with the advice and consent of
your board, if you are a legal entity with that structure, and your outside
legal counsel. It also requires that both groups understand, and are
supportive of, the other's mission, philosophy, credibility, etc.
In the case of MUG's, where the mission is less 'complicated' and more
'amoral / apolitical', this is an even less complicated decision for a group
to reach. (Unless, of course, you run the MUG For Baby Seal Abuse or some
such ;)
So, in a nutshell, I would encourage user groups to boycott the rising costs
of taking a breath, combat the growth of litigiousness, and generally avoid
spending real dollars to pad the pockets of insurance companies, personal
injury lawyers and those of similarly low-character (oops, did I really type
that?).
Ways to Avoid Spending Dollars...
Develop a relationship with a local school or PTA. Assist with an annual
technology project in exchange for space and affiliated status.
If you, or one of your members, are a member of a church with meeting space,
assist the church with a tech project in exchange for space. Help with the
website, teach some evening course, ...
Does your community have a barter network? If so, join. We have purchased
legal and accounting services, printing services, advertising and office
supplies through the barter network. There is even an auto-home insurer as
a member...who could probably write us a PI policy...if we needed it! You
need something to barter: your wonderful Mac skills and networking
knowledge and publishing expertise and all the professions of all your
members...they will probably help out with no problem! ( Is there a
mechanic in your group? Could she offer 1 hour of labor to help out, to add
to your 'barter wallet'? )
I hope this message just generally has the point of view: "Build strong
relationships in your community. It can save money, reduce the need for
some expenses, and build a stronger, more vibrant user group."
As Dennis Miller says, "Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be
wrong."
