where, it seems, one can download a free utility which purports to
create pdf files which are every bit as good as those created by
Acrobat.
"Every bit as good" is true if you're just creating simple flat PDFs.
Luckily, most people are. It's not terribly different to the shareware
and free PDF utilities that are available for UNIX like, for example,
txt2pdf
http://freshmeat.net/projects/txt2pdf/
or the more ubiquitous ps2pdf
http://www.ps2pdf.com/
and of course
http://www.gnu.org/software/ghostscript/ghostscript.html
http://www.ghostscript.com/
http://www.artifex.com/licensing/index.htm
By the way, as far as I know, the pdf995 product is a Windows only
utility. So, if anyone can help me scratch Adobe's back in return for
all the
scratching of my back they have done, that would be great!!
Also, on their FAQ page:
"PDF995 refers to an unmodified version of GNU Ghostscript and also
supports other Postscript-to-PDF converters. GNU Ghostscript is
distributed under the GNU General Public License. You may obtain the
source code for GNU Ghostscript here."
I'm pretty sure their licensing conditions break with the spirit and
letter of the GNU licence.
The great PDF support they claim is all because they're standing on the
shoulders of giants, in this case the coders for Ghostscript. I assume
that maybe they have a license from artifex for distributing this but
who knows....
