Well, I did it again and volunteered to facilitate a presentation at
our
MUG's meeting next week on a topic about which I am really not too
qualified to speak. The focus is something like, "Using Databases at
Home and Work", and is supposed to include a comparison of AppleWorks'
database capabilities versus Filemaker Pro's. I have some FileMaker
background but not so much using AppleWorks.
I had a similar assignment, but mine was a short discussion of
databases in general. I do a lot with FileMaker Pro, and in fact teach
classes in it, along with Appleworks, but find that both programs are
often over the heads of new users and over needs of simple data
gathering. I introduced iData Pro as the means of the simplest data
gathering. It costs $39.00 from Casady&Greene, but if you follow the
link on their web page, user group members can buy it for $19.99. There
are only text fields, no calulations, pictures, etc. but there are
several useful templates for labels and you can teach people to use it
in a few minutes. It will also export data in a format useable in both
AppleWorks and FileMaker Pro when the user "grows" in their needs.
I then gave examples of reasons to move up to Appleworks (things like
certificates, mail merge etc.). Then I showed an example of why someone
would want to use FileMaker (related databases and niceties such as
buttons). It certainly caused some interest in our group.
