I don't think there is really a debate here. Appleworks is a great
application for many things.. but for database work, it is somewhat
limited.
Like Photoshop, I will never 'get' all the features that are available
in FMP without much training or instruction. BUT.. I know my way
around it very well! In my opinion, Appleworks database is much like
AOL.. great for beginning and learning.. but once you are
comfortable... you want more...
Also.. there are a huge amount of user groups dedicated to the FMP
platform and willing to help with scripting and layouts. Few dedicated
database user groups exist for Appleworks (or that I am aware of).
So.. strictly from my point of view.. Appleworks is a wonderous and
economical program for word processing and simple database needs- much
like Microsoft Office is great for word processing and PowerPoint. Do
they all have to be good at everything? not likely. Use each for
their strength..
Personally, and from a business point of view.. If I need a database
(one that can import and output to Excel) that works and can
comfortably predict future needs..
There IS no comparison to FileMakerPro.
Juuuust my 2cents..
Cheers,
Gail M. Murphy

Experience is what allows you to recognize a mistake the second time
you make it.
