Seeing the announcement for the event several days ago just left me
feeling
"chilled". Yet again, Apple is limiting its vision to just the creative
market
(not that they're a bad bunch!).
Where is the draw for the rest of the general Mac population? Or the
new PC
converts it's been able to gather? How in the world does it expect it's
market
share to go beyond the "switch" campaign with this new tactic? I fear
that all
the improvements that we've seen will be reduced.. as usual--or what
seems to
be the norm--one step forward, two steps back.
Haven't you learned, yet ..Apple? Steve? Do you realize the loss this
type of
thinking had years ago when you lost track of the business or scientific
fields, or how about the education market? Mac OS X and new server class
products
have been good but...take education, it really hasn't been as easy as
you thought it would be to bring that back, has it? The Dell black can
be seen
in most institutions but the Apple White is not shining bright as it
should!
And don't get me started on the rest of the computing world.
Unfortunately, in
the real world--perception does rule! and Apple is perceived as just
fluff
computing. (no hecklers please, it is just a generalization, one I'm
constantly fighting against with all my PC friends which is why I make
this
point)
As program coordinator for our group, I was willing to try to pull
together a
bus trip for our MUG members this year to New York, but with the new
limited
venue, our members will not see much value in attending. They would
want to
see new hardware, new software--games, utilities, productivity, etc.
well
beyond the graphics focus. And that thought is even with quite a few of
our
members involved the in the creative fields.
Where will the mainstream MUG community fit in with this model? Beyond
the
MUGs who are involved as specific "creative" user communities with FCP
user
groups, or SIGs with creative content focus, the rest of the Mac
faithful have
yet again been given a slap in the face!
