The question is what will be there for the rest of us? That's a good

I think Steve Jobs made it pretty clear in his Keynote at the January
MacExpo that the increasing numbers of people which Apple was seeing in
their retail Apple Stores was really starting to bring into question
the wisdom of investing lots of money into attracting the same sorts of
folks to shows like the traditional MacExpo's. I would hazard a guess
that the average annual computing related expenditures by a graphic
professional are much higher than those of the average attendee to
traditional MacExpo's, so I could see where Apple might conclude that
it should put its "show" monies into targeting the bigger spenders but
transfer its focus on "the rest of us" from these annual three day
extravaganzas over to the retail outlets.
I was in New York over Valentine's weekend and had my first chance to
visit a real Apple Store. So far, we don't have one in Canada. If you
were to ask me, "would you rather have the traditional MacWorld Expop
back or would you rather have an Apple Store in Toronto?", I'm afraid
my answer would have to be the latter.
Sure, it would be great to have both, or better yet both a Store and a
MacExpo in Toronto. But that's not going to happen.
It would be nice to think that a significant part of the problem is the
high costs of New York City, and that perhaps we might some day see a
MacExpo in Chicago, or Atlanta, or any one of many other centres. But I
think the reality is that it not only has to be sensible on the cost
side but it needs to demonstrate quantifiable results on the "plus
sales" side. AND it has to beat out other alternatives like additional
Apple Stores in terms of return on investment.
If the east coast MacWorld goes the way of the dodo bird, I will miss
it. But if Apple's found a better way to arrange their spending
portfolio, I say more power to them!
