Hey everybody,

Unlike my other two posts, I won't respond to a wall of quotes, but just offer two thoughts:

(1) For me, the legitimacy of my MUG is paramount, that it behaves in an above-the-board manner, and is considered a serious and respected organization, by Apple, 3rd-party companies, our presenters, members, etc.

For awhile (many years ago), I think Mac/computer user groups were seen, both by 3rd-party software companies and other Mac/computer users, as places/hotbeds to get free/pirated software.

To counter that, in our group's nine years, we have yet to publicly present/promote file-sharing options like Napster, Audiogalaxy, LimeWire, etc., even though our members may know about them or use them.

For me, I visit SpyMac for its galleries. Nowhere else online (that I know) is there such an active community of people posting new pictures everyday. I find that very interesting and entertaining.

I also like that SpyMac lists on its main page a section about rumors from other sites, which helps me decide if I want to visit them or not, so it's sort of a mini-portal, but not a major-portal like MacRumors.com.

So to me, SpyMac is more a gallery site than a rumors site, but to me, it is still a *website*, and I can't/don't really see it as a "user group," official or otherwise.

The potential nerve that this touches w/ me (and maybe w/ Yan) is, does this strengthen the legitimacy of "user groups" as we all work so hard to establish/maintain? For me, I don't see that answer as being yes.

(2) In response to:
> However, every group at one time or another has fed on a rumor.

I would have to definitely respectfully disagree, based on (1). I would also definitely encourage people to only speak for themselves or their groups, and to not generalize/project to everyone who may be their peers.

Sincerely,
