Referring to my quick reference in my dispatch:
The way BeiMac used to do its own website was, as an ad in Macworld
suggested some years ago, "like they did it in 1996". Actually, it wasn't
that horrid, but it involved opening Dreamweaver (mass RAM hog IMHO on my
system), changing files, and dealing with an uncooperative-at-best Chinese
input module in Dreamweaver. It was crazy, and it reminded me to that thing
about locking a guy in a glass box for 40-odd days. In this day of dynamic
content management, one wonders how they could pull this off.
(But then again, seriously, one imagines how I could have made it alive with
a bike given my vehicular skills now... ;-) But I digress. Technology
marches ahead. Don't be left behind.)
Now it's different. Although setting up the site via XOOPS was a lot more
complicated, it's easy once it's set-up. I was at my friend's home last day
and it was simple. I just hooked up to his AirPort network running off a
still Neantherdal (did I get that spelling right?) 56.6K modem, updated the
site, and boom - just like that. Not one-click (thanks to my ghastly setting
to approve content before they're sent onto the web), but few-clicks (let's
just say that.) ;-)
I know that the MUG Centre recommends against putting every last news
article on the site, and that's part of what we follow too. Not every new PR
release gets in our tunnel for news submission. (Channel?) But BeiMac
things, and major news articles often are what ends up on the main webpage.
Oh, and also Apple China and Chinese Mac Community things get on our main
page.
We also have to match our local market. The locals want beimac.cn (our new
Chinese domain) to feature all kinds of news, so we're following their lead
there. If news is sparing on beimac.com, then it's unsparing on beimac.cn.
Mainland Chinese websites often are faster than us with the latest news, but
we hope to turn that around. Not sure if that's good, though.
I was just thinking about which site was still on static, and which on
dynamic, content management? I tried iBlog for .Mac but that didn9t quite
match... Yet...
Anyway, just the Erratic Thought for Late Thursday Evening... ;-)
Best,
Yan.
