Hi Sue, if you've only seen the retail prices for hotel rooms, I can see
why you think you need a roommate. If $49-$65 a night sounds better, read
on.
Mac World Expo San Fransciso is one of the biggest Mac Events of the
year. This year may be especially big, what with the G5's & the release
of Panther OSX.3. It usually takes me about 2 full days just to walk the
trade show floor, but I ask a lot of questions. YMMV. This show is so big
that it takes BOTH the East & West buildings of the Moscone Center. It's
a
good place to get deals on hardware & software, as well as just check out
the newest stuff & ask a lot of questions (see!?). And it's in San
Francisco! A nifty place to visit, be a tourist, catch a show, see some
scenery, have some dinner, and see how Public Transit can be done right.
I've found the cheapest hotel prices (by far!) at
http://www.IFlySWA.com You don't have to book the airfare unless you
want to, but they excellent prices on hotels & flights (LAX-OAK $29 each
way if you book soon). From Oakland airport, there is a $2 "AIRBART" bus
which takes you to the Colosseum station, where you hop on the BART
subway to Powell st (another $2.65 or something). That's about 2 blocks
from the Expo.
In years past, I've gone straight from the plane/bus/subway to the Expo
and checked my luggage in at the MacWorld coat & bag check (for a buck or
2).
That works out well. SF has great public transportation, you won't need
nor want a car there.
To book a hotel through the SouthWest Airline's website: Choose "Oakland,
CA" as the city, then type in "moscone" as the place if interest. Then
select "Moscone Convention Center, CA" on the next page.
I see hotel prices starting from $49/night. Last year I stayed at a
totally decent hotel for $46/night which is about 8 blocks from the Expo,
and they had a free breakfast every day! If you are driving, know that
free parking is usually not included with a room, so if that's an issue,
be sure to bring it up. Other hotel discount sites:
