TCO = Total Cost of Ownership, and here's a link to a Newsfactor.com

that looks at both sides of the issue for both computers. We've always
heard, for example, that though Macs cost more they are less expensive
to
own or suport because they don't break and the OS is more stable. No
deal-making/deal-breaking conclusions but a good look at how hard it
is to
figure TCO between the two platforms.
We have just completed 3 kiosks for use in public settings for audio
and video recording and playback, the difference in hardware cost from
mac v pc was around $350. We went the mac route because we know in a
year or two the value of the equipment will be much higher than that of
PC stuff. We also know that it will just keep working for years after
that.
Nice quote from the Isle of Man computer bus project...
http://www.computerbus.com/
"Going strong after 5 years, the Manx Telecomputer Bus celebrates its
birthday in September 2003.
And despite being on the road for all that time, the bus is still looks
much as it did back in 1998, thanks to the investment in the very best
technology five years ago, and painstaking care and maintainance."
You can guess what technology they are using!
I did read in an article once that the Isle of Man education tech
support was one person and she looked after maybe 20 or so Mac school
networks.
From the other side...
My desktop PC which I use for making cross platform versions of our
multimedia CDs was 'upgraded' my my brother-in-law who has 10+ years IT
industry experience.
He'd got it all plugged in and working after trying 3 different
motherboards. He installed a nice clean hard disk and a brand new
installation of Windows XP. Next thing was to download some virus
software and firewall stuff, while installing the virus scanner it did
a quick scan and found the blaster worm! The machine had literally been
on and connected to the net for 15 mins!
He was so shocked he setup a website... www.virusnews.co.uk where he
recommends 6 things you should do to protect your PC.
It's worth remembering that their is an entire industry setup to
maintain the wintel world, they have shelves and shelves of training
manuals and reference book in book stores. In our local outlets there
are maybe 2 or 3 shelves of mac books.
Cheers
B.
