structured and how it works for you. Here9s our situation...
MetroMac was formed about three years ago. Our original goal was to keep
things small and low cost until we were organized; consequently we had no
official corporate organization for the first two years, and no dues structure.
When we decided to start coillecting revenue for future activities, we filed
with the IRS for a Taxpayer ID Number, with the goal of opening a bank
account. Banks are happy to open a bank account for you if you have a TIN, but
if you want a FREE account, you will need to have tax-exempt status (federal
and/or state). In our case, we have secured the services of a major law firm
in NYC who's taken us on as a pro bono client, and who is preparing both a
Certificate of Incorporation and a 501(c)(3) application (we had originally
planned on filing as a 501(c)(7)[social organization] becaus eht epaperwork was
less, but with a law firm taking care of the details, we decided a (c)(3) was
worth while).
An important aspect of your tax exempt appliaction is providing a clear
narrative of what the group does and how it meets the goals of the tax exempt
status. If you decide to apply for (c)(3) you will need clearly explain how
you group fills an educational purpose. Your application may also trigger
specific reviews in your home state.
I'm down the road from you this week (Seattle) but will be home on Dec 2nd.
Feel free to call me if you want to discuss anything further.
