Of interest to your MUG Members...
Widespread PC-based viruses have been inundating some Mac users
with such files in recent days. Although Mac users are not
susceptible to the programs these attachments run, they can
quickly clutter one's download folder.
If you're like me, you're getting possibly dozens of emails
a day which have the ".pif" or ".scr" virus worm attachments.
The most I've received in a single day is 440. Each is between
89 and 110 K in size -- a real nuisance, to say the least.
The best way to deal with this is to blacklist them at your
ISP's smtp server level. That way they don't even find their
way into your mailbox when you retrieve your email. Call and
ask your ISP if "web-based mail" is available and if they
can blacklist those strings.
Next best remedy:
The PandaWare Company has posted a free utility for Mac OS X
users whose email programs automatically download email
virus attachments. This free AppleScript solution watches your
mail for files whose extension is ".pif" or ".scr", and moves
such files to the trash.
This simple solution, "De-PIF script", is available free for
Mac OS X users from The PandaWare Company at
