Dear Rick,
Our group's modest hardware lending library has been a popular benefit for
members over the years. Right now the library includes a digital camera, a
CD-RW drive, a digital media card reader, and SCSI and USB Zip drives.
The SCSI and USB Zip drives can be checked out as a set by members who need
to transfer data from older Macs (very popular!) The camera is an ancient
Canon A5, but it still circulates regularly. It has traveled all over the
world, and most everyone who has borrowed it has ended up buying a digital
camera.
Right now we're considering adding an iSight camera. We're also thinking
about equipment for transferring old family videos to DVD. Does anyone have
any suggestions on this?
Here's how the hardware library works:
Items circulate to members at no charge for a week, and can be renewed if no
one is waiting. Members sign a contract agreeing to pay for repairs or
replacement if damage occurs. To date we have not had to enforce the
contract. We have discussed asking for a refundable deposit, but haven't
done this yet.
Hardware must be requested ahead of time - no walk-ins. (Our library is
located in a member's business). Each piece of equipment circulates in the
original packaging or in a padded case, and each case has an inventory taped
inside the lid listing all the contents. The librarian keeps copies of each
inventory list which she and the borrower check off when the item goes out,
and again when it is returned. We build in a day between loans so we have
time to check equipment before it circulates again.
Hope this helps,
Elsa (who was a university librarian in a former life)
