Rick, I've posted my group's approach to the list in the past, so will
apologize for anyone who sees it as a duplicate.
We gave up on the books issue some time ago because of the logistics of
someone having them at meetings, checking them in and out, keeping track
of who has what and when it is due, pursuing them to get it back, etc.
We opted to donate materials to our local library (where we also happen
to meet). That includes books, training videos or DVDs and magazine
subscriptions.
The result is that the library has a terrific, current collection of Mac
resources (all with labels in them indicating they are donated by our
group) for our members and anyone else to use. The library handles all
the logistics and storage, obviously. Patrons find out about us when they
check out the materials, and we often get new members out of the deal.
Best of all, the community, including our members, have access to the
materials not just once a month or based on someone's schedule, but
whenever the library is open.
We are seen as a group who supports the community through the library,
maintain a good relationship with our meeting location host, and make
more Mac resources available to everyone (our members included). A win-
win-win situation.
Hardware obviously can't be handled in this fashion, unless your local
library would be willing to undertake the effort. We haven't examined
that possibility, but it is something to think about.
