Yes, we do that on an ongoing basis. Our "UG Locator" gets an
average 25 to 60 inquiries a month from people looking for a
group -- which we attempt to match with groups from our
MUG Registry.
Many of these are also looking for groups to visit while
they're on vacation, or business trips -- not just relocation.
On the down side, we are able to place only a small percentage
of these with a destination group -- unfortunately many of
them call back saying the numbers are disconnected, or the
contact person is no longer involved with the group, or
that the group has been disbanded.
Groups should try to keep their UG profile up to date in both
Apple's locator and the UGN Registry. We ping, parse and purge
the registry every quarter or so, but I don't think Apple does.
They should also try to do a better job of local marketing
because many of our inquires looking for a group do have a
local group near by and didn't know ! Had one this morning
in Detroit.
Additionally...
Being an adjunct professor at James Madison University, each
semester I come in contact with lots of students from afar looking
for a local group, or a group in their area. If I had more time
I would start up a JMU user group -- as there are some 2,000
Macs on campus, and lots of people looking for the right-click
mouse button. If you major in graphic design, you use a Mac.
We're a sister university to Virginia Tech (just down the road)
and we're working on a 'sharing' program with the cluster
installation there.
I make it a point to steer all my students toward groups in
their area -- and strongly advocate joining a user group to
enhance their computing experience.
We have 22 flat panel iMacs in my computer lab, and usually
run about 50/50 Mac to Windows users. I've been able to
convert quite a few to Macs. We've had three G5 purchasers
and two Powerbook purchasers so far this semester. They always
ask:
> "My parents want to get me a new computer, what should I get?"
DUH! Is there but one answer to that question??? ;-)
About 20% of the students show up with iPods -- Mac,
Windows or otherwise -- and they've found the iPod to be an
excellent means of transporting their in-class work files
to and from class. I teach Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark
and Typography and those files quite often get very large.
An unsung feature of the iPod is its voluminous storage
capacity, making it ideal for student transport of files.
Now if I could just get them to remove their ear buds
during class I'd have it made.
:-)
