Group,
The Rose-Hulman Mac Interest Group was just recently started, as I had
mentioned in a previous email. For those of you who are not familiar
with the Midwest, Rose is an undergraduate engineering college where
almost all of the students study some form of engineering. As you can
guess, our campus is 99.9% Windows oriented and I have found that it is
very difficult to integrate Macs on a campus where everyone is used to
using Windows - pretty much the standard platform for most engineering
disciplines, especially in industry.
My point being, our school is quite a bit different from say a liberal
arts school where Macs are very commonplace. Do any of you out there,
involved in either campus groups or user groups in general, have a good
idea on how to make Macs interesting to engineers? It really is a tough
question to answer, and it seems to me that the typical "digital
lifestyle" may appeal to some students, but the vast majority of us are
"tools", for lack of a better word, and we need more than just pictures
and movies to keep our palate wet. There are tons of things user groups
can do when it comes to movie making or picture editing or whatnot, but I
feel that I am at a loss for really "eye catching" ideas that would make
our club standout on campus.
Our website is
http://www.rose-hulman.edu/rh-mig/ if you would like to
see what we have been doing the past few weeks. Also, all my slides can
be found on iDisk mjaneczek if anyone cares to take a look at them. Feel
free to use material in your own user groups if you like what you see.
Thanks,
-Matt
