Anybody know who is officially the Oldest APPLE User Group?
I believe that would be us, the South Jersey Apple Users Group.
According to carbon dating of the club's by-laws (done by the
University of New Hamster) the group was formed sometime in the second
century, A.D.
As the computer hadn't been invented yet, let alone electricity and
such, there wasn't much to converse about and membership remained quite
low for the first several centuries. In fact, the total membership
amounted to one - our founder, Stephen Wobs.
But membership began to increase as the political tensions rose during
the Middle Ages. Just as one could claim sanctuary within the walls of
a church, one could claim asylum by joining the group. In fact, many of
our then membership were from asylums, a trend that continues unto this
very day.
Things really began to move in ernest around the time of the pilgrimage
to the New Land. We were personally asked to move with them by the
members of the royal family. Once established on our new turf, our then
President Jim Anderson set about recruiting new members. Unfortunately,
the chief constable of the village, one Jeremiah Dell, believed that
the group was practicing a form of witchcraft and ordered the group to
be pilloried in the town square and repeat the name "Limbaugh" over and
over again for the next two years.
Ironically, by the time of the end of the sentence, Dell himself was
accused of practicing witchcraft (although records indicate that it was
a poor copy) and was summarily banished from the village.
Nothing of much note occurred over the next couple of centuries until
the advent of the computer, with the exception of the signing of the
Constitution, the perfection of the incandescent light and 'Charlie'
Angels.' With this innovation, our group was able to focus its efforts
much more effectively.
We began giving presentations on such subjects as "How to Deal with a
Surly Used Car Salesman" and "Ten Things to Do with Discarded Facial
Tissue." As time went on, our presentations became more relevant, as in
our 1986 presentation, "Bill Gates - Innovator or Anti-Christ?".
The rest is history. Today, practically a millenium has passed and Jim
Anderson is still our president, volunteers are scarce and the price of
gas is still going up.
