The only affect on operations is that we have a lot less recordkeeping to do.
So far OxMUG has been run on almost no money and is definitely for
information, knowledge and social profit. BUT not for money profit.
We run a wholly electronic group, we've not had anyone who is not
email-connected.
We do have monthly meetings where some of the members come along to hear
talks on a wide variety of topics. Luckily we have Oxford University people
on our group and therefore have access to a well appointed room for our
meetings very cheaply.
Our only real costs are for the hosting of the website and domain
registration, neither of which are very large.
We have just elected a committee to help (me) run things. And have just
opened a bank account. A while ago I started the idea of an equipment
exchange either free or for a fee depending on the person disposing the
equipment. For this informal service the buyer gives OxMUG a donation, a
sort of "finders fee". So far we've not had to levy a subscription. That may
change as we grow and have larger meetings. We are now moving closer to that
time.
We started almost two years ago, 12 met in the Eagle and Child, Oxford,
where JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis once used to meet. We've since grown, mostly
by word of mouth and being on the Apple User Groups website, to just under
100.
More that all the above it is a fantastic group of very helpful people, the
elist is really vital (both meanings) and I'm really proud of OxMUGs
achievements. We regularly solve other members problems by the elist and
keep each other up-to-date with various developments.
