Hi Joe,
You picked a topic that is near and dear to me. My family is very
involved with a local group that refurbishes computers for schools and
non-profit organizations, so we see it all hehee. Personally, I would say
you should accept every mac offered to you, graciously. And as you do
explain to them what your goals are for the computers and eventually you
will get better stuff. Many people looked at our group as a place to get
rid of junk. They thought we recycled (I love to HATE that word). Even
though it is (in a sense) what we do, drilling the word "Refurbish" into
people has really paid off. We do refurbish mac's and pc's for schools,
and many are in local schools now because of our group.
Of course we get plenty of computers that even museums wouldn't accept, but
they are cool to look at if one has never seen them before. Makes you
appreciate just how far we've come in the computer world. As for the
"true" junk, it has to be gotten rid of, and it's not always easy. Look
around and find scrap dealers, you might get lucky and find one who will
take the items for you.
What macs to keep and refurbish. I would say any mac with a processor that
can be exchanged is good, guess that would be 7300 and up. Give them to
any place that can use computers, schools, day care, after school boys and
girls clubs.......ANYONE. There are more places out there that would love
to have a computer, just need to contact them is all. One good place in
need of computers are local handicap groups, and mac's are just what they
need, easy to use and something all age groups can be creative on. Do all
you can to put out working mac's, even apple offers an older OS's to put on
there, up to 7.6.1 sure it's not the latest and greatest, but what you are
most likely not getting in anything that can take anything newer anyway
, if it can the end user can buy the OS. It's a start, and gets people use
to mac's (which we know they'll fall in love with and bee hooked for life).
Giving back to the community is rewarding and makes you feel incredibly
great inside. If you'd like to see what our local group has done, go to
http://www.smartco.org/ and browse around. The site is
'severely' outdated, but I'm working on more up to date pages as soon
as the director sends me the current data. Because of all that my family
does for the group, our MUG group is able to use the facility for our
monthly meetings, which has been perfect for us.
Keep us informed of your successful Mac placements, and keep up the good
work :)
