Our club meets at the local High School. They have an umbrella "slip and
fall" type liability policy. They require that we pay our share of this policy
along with all clubs and organizations that meet at the school. It costs us about
$400 a year that covers all club supported events - General meetings, Board
meetings, and SIG meetings - for 10 million.
We checked into personal liability insurance for the club officers, but
rejected it as too expensive.
The club does not sponsor any one individual or company to do "professional"
level tech support/repairs, however we do encourage camaraderie and a spirit
of helping between members. If one member "hires" another to work for them to
"fix" their Mac, that is between them and we feel that since the club didn't
tell one to hire the other, any "damages" should be settled between the private
parties.
That said, we understand that we live in a litigious society and there is
nothing stopping anyone from suing anyone else.
So far (knock wood) we've never been sued.

We really haven't discussed a separate student or youth membership fee

As Sandy said in her note, things aren't getting any cheaper to run a
