Title: Re: Free .mac Account
Several comments
- The MUG should regularly assess whether the Ambassador has the time and interest to perform the tasks expected. Some of us burn out and the “torch” should be passed to fresh blood.
- The MUG free .mac account should NOT become a personal account of anyone as I gathered some have responded. I don’t care HOW much the ambassador does for the MUG; the .mac account is for the club. Similarly, the Ambassador should NOT use the “free” or low cost Apple products (software, shirts, etc.) for personal use.
- Long before .mac arrived the Naples MUG (NMUG) had a web site {http://www.naplesmug.com/} hosted on a local ISP / web site supplier. At / about the time of .mac appearance the ISP / web site supplier ran into financial problems, sold itself and we could no longer get to our site to modify / update the site. We were stuck in a dead web site situation for many months
- I forget the name of the original free .mac structure but NMUG signed up for a free .mac account in the name of naplesmug to create a modifiable web page {<http://homepage.mac.com/naplesmug/>}. Next we contacted the keeper of web addresses and paid for 2 functions: 1) keep {http://www.naplesmug.com/} alive and 2) implement a forwarding so that browsers heading to {http://www.naplesmug.com/} are delivered to {<http://homepage.mac.com/naplesmug/>}. This lets us refer to a simple URL while using our .mac account to host our web pages.
- Hence we have the best of 2 worlds. A low cost .mac web site (free or $100 / year) that we can work AND a URL that is much simpler looking than {<http://homepage.mac.com/naplesmug/>}
