I've read the several comments on last week's CompUSA open house and I
guess we fell somewhere in the middle.
The store that I went to at about 7:30pm was in Scottsdale, Arizona. We
had received an announcement from Greg Grothe, an AMUG member and the
Apple Solutions Specialist, a few days earlier and managed to get out
the word on AMUG's listserve. But, unfortunately, that was it.
When I got there Greg was busy with a couple of customers so I wandered
around. There was a nice spread of food and drinks. The only special
that I noticed was for an Epson all in one that was free after rebates
and gift cards. There had been others on the announcement but I didn't
see any fliers at the store and didn't remember what they were so
couldn't report on them.
I did meet the store manager, found out that he had paid for the
refreshments, and entered into a very positive dialog. He offered us
the use of one of his class rooms for meetings which unfortunately
would be too small for our typical attendance, but we talked about
perhaps holding mid month meetings there focused on training. He then
offered the use of Greg for training; both Greg and I laughed since I
had just strong armed him into doing an iWork demo in May.
One fun thing that happened was that I ran into someone that I used to
work with years ago. She and her husband had started a small desk top
publishing business and now have 25 employees. All Mac users. She was
in there to buy her fourth iSight which she uses to keep in touch with
her children scattered around the country.
Was the event a success, I really couldn't tell. The Apple section
wasn't particularly busy, but then neither was the rest of the store.
Greg said that he had a decent flow of business earlier. All in all, it
might be a success if the relationship with the store manager pans out.
