The first thing I would do is to ask your new members how they found your group. That is where I would put my money.
This year I have gotten a number of emails from people in other areas who were moving to our area. Obviously they checked the Apple User Group Finder or they Googled our area. All of these people were coming from other groups. These are the people you want. I sent a very nice invite to them to drop in to our meeting when they get settled. When they do get to the meeting, we make a nice fuss over them.
Just because our group is 18 years old doesn't mean that everyone knows we are here. We encourage the ladies at the library where we meet, to mention that we meet there, when someone asks. I don’t think you can ask for a better advertisement.
We are a small group surrounded by PC users so it may be harder to find new members. We could leave business cards and brochures off at the nearest Apple Store or CompUSA but, that is 5 hours away by car so... Didn’t someone mention that they had three Apple Stores in their town. It just isn’t fair.
Many cable companies have to have some broadcast time for local interest and many local talk radio shows have plenty of time to have someone interesting take up 10 or 15 minutes of their time. Why not have someone from your group highlight your MUG on the free air once or twice a year. Or if you are planning a special event, have the local radio station broadcast from your computer fair or swap meet. Just give them plenty of advanced notice.

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to get some ideas of how/when/what other user group's and
their leaders are planning/using to get the word out beyond
their members with regards to their MUGs - meetings, programs, etc.?
I know of some groups who go beyond the website and newsletter via live
broadcasts. It's a varied topic and there are sure to be as many ideas
and suggestions for all of us to borrow as there are MUGs around the world.
Would you mind sharing how your group publicizes it's offerings?
I look forward to learning some new ideas and ways to use the tools
available to us.
