I believe Apple sees user groups as nothing more than another
marketing channel - one with a semi-captive audience. That's the way
I see them treating us. They love to push their marketing materials
on Ambassadors, tell us about their promotions, etc. Meanwhile they
try hard to distance themselves, via legal disclaimers, licensing
limitations, etc. from the possibility of being tied to any "bad"
advice or impacts from the same user groups. All of that may be
disappointing, but it isn't terribly unexpected.
That isn't what I believe my user group is about. I see my group as a
way to get our members together to share knowledge. If that knowledge
sometimes comes in the form of an Apple rep telling us more about the
latest/greatest from Cupertino, that's fine too. It would be nice if
they threw in a few more goodies in exchange for the opportunity to
present face-to-face to that semi-captive audience, but I'm not going
to get all worked up if they don't - and they usually don't.
I think Apple makes a lot of lousy decisions and some generally great
products. Apple's trends in behavior towards user groups is just one
example of lousy decisions. That's the way I see it. That isn't going
to stop me from making my group a great place for people to come and
share information related to Apple products - with Apple's help or
without it.

There is no reason to have a Apple group. Apple does not support
the user groups anymore.
The USED to support them well, but that support is now non-existent.
