Hi All.
I wrote this for some local email and mac lists. Since so many of us
know Chuck, I hope it is appropriate for this list. Those of you who
feel it appropriate, feel free to post this to your list.

If any of you have been to a a MUG, an Apple Store or another Mac
event to learn about MacSpeech's iListen, you have met Chuck Rogers.
He, his wife, his children... his friends and his family all call New
Orleans home and have loved it well.
Chuck is one of the best people I know. He has been including me in
email updates to his friends, taking us along as they find each other
there, learn of losses, etc. From what I gather, he was out of town
when the storm hit. Janis had her own adventure and is safe. They are
not sure of their house. Others know their homes are gone.
For example on August 28, 2005 :
- We don't know about Coop. As of last night he said he was
staying, but the bar is closed. I have not been able to reach him,
but I *think* he probably left town.
- We have some very dear friends that we know did not make it out.
They decided to rough it out. I just talked to them and they were
having a hurricane party. They are holed up in the 2nd story of a
building near the Garden District, not too far from our house. I am
very, very worried about them.
In other news, Janis' uncle, Joe had a heart attack today. He is in
intensive care. That's all I know at this point, but the ironic
thing is that he is the father of Janis' cousin Connie, to whose
home Janis is headed.
later...
Many of our friends and extended family members have offered Janis
or myself money and places to stay. We are so grateful for all the
offers. We are so much more fortunate than other victims because
most of our income is not dependant on anyone or anything in New
Orleans.
Coop lost everything except what he has in his bar and the
apartment above it. My son Adam and Megan lost all their
belongings, except what they could bring with them. Cary also lost
all his belongings, including a bedroom set that was mine when I
was a child. We have many friends who have been displaced from
their homes. Some are still in New Orleans, and even after they are
evacuated to Houston (or wherever), they will not have the
resources to travel and be reunited with loved ones, and, have lost
everything except the clothes on their back.
The complete updates are on the web at <http://www.macchuck.com> in
case any of you would like to read them.
Chuck has friends all over the country and many of us have asked if
we could help. For those of you who are like me and are not into
giving to the Red Cross with it's high overhead, I share an
alternative of donating directly.
Chuck wrote:
What many people are telling us is that they would like to give
money to someone where they know it will do some good, rather than
to an organization where they are not sure how the money will be
used. Janis and I discussed this, and have decided to provide an
alternative for anyone who feels this way. So here is our idea: I
have a PayPal account that I rarely use. If you would like to
donate money, and trust me to be a good steward of your funds you
can PayPal it to me. You can get more information on my web site
(www.macchuck.com).
I sent some money and asked if I may tell others about the
opportunity to help through him & he wrote back:
Absolutely.
I intend to use some of the money to help get 2 friends who were
saving up to move to Oregon relocated. So far, we are hoping they
are in the Superdome, and therefore eventually on the way to
Houston. If not, we are very, very worried about what may have
happened to them.
There are other stories as well. A cook from Coop's Place lost
everything due to the breech of the Tennessee St. levee. (Same one
that did my son Adam's house in).
Another bartender that works part time at Coop's, part-time
musician Tom Taylor who lost everything due to the 17th st. breech.
There are others I have not heard from, or some I heard are OK, but
have no savings, no home, no possessions, etc.
It is truly heartbreaking. And while I know Red Cross will
eventually get to them, there is only so much to go around. Helping
them directly is the best thing I can do.
Best Regards,
Chuck Rogers
Chuck is also doing his best to resume teaching iListen. You can
check the schedule on the left side of <http://www.macspeech.com/>.
And if you purchase iListen in Sept 2% of your purchase price will go
to the Red Cross.
